IS THE MASS RURAL MIGRATION PATTERN SLOWING?
How long will the trend last?
As people across the nation were coming to
terms with a new world when the pandemic hit two years ago, a lot of changes
were made. More and more companies were offering work from home opportunities.
Residents from bigger cities have been migrating out of more urban areas to
avoid illnesses and higher costs of living. They are searching for more rural
areas where things move a bit slower, allow for privacy and are surrounded by
the beautiful American countryside. For us at UC, this moment where thousands of
people are seeking rural and lifestyle properties over urban living has been
huge for us. The question remains: “How long will we see this trend last?”
According to a recent article from the Wall
Street Journal, there has essentially been a complete switch in migration
patterns in the U.S. with thousands of people leaving urban communities to move
into rural counties since 2020. There has also been a significant rise in job
postings in these counties as well as personal income per capita. Remote work
is a significant piece of why people were migrating out of urban areas, but, as
companies are pushing for their employees to transition back to working from
offices full time or hybrid schedules, this could hinder this trend. It could
also disproportionally affect rural communities closest to urban hubs due to
new residents preferring an easier commute to their jobs in bigger cities.
While there are still large numbers of Americans migrating
into country real estate, this movement is vulnerable as the U.S. returns to
normal. United Country affiliates are taking advantage of where the market is
now, and demonstrating the ease and beauty of country living. As we navigate
this unique period in history, we will continue to keep you up to date with the
latest developments in real estate and other related fields.
